It's crappy. I know. Don't laugh, or I will...meh.
Looking up at the stars, it was hard to believe the world I lived in was in such disarray. Everywhere the earth was falling apart, no longer able to support the billions of life forms trying to sustain themselves. The future looked bleak. But now, sitting beneath shining stars and a bright full moon it was hard for me to worry. I was a happy fourteen year old, with not a single care in the world. I was one of the few lucky children to be born with a roof over my head. It was estimated that of the 10 billion people spread out across the world, half didn’t even have a home. Scientists didn’t even bother at guessing how many were below the poverty line.
A snuffle at the end of my feet brought me back to reality. I looked down at my naked feet to see Willow, my 7 month old puppy. She grumbled again and her paws ran through the air, as if running away or after something. The black mutt was deep in sleep. I smiled and reached one long arm down to stroke her black fur. My fingers ran through her curls, enjoying the soft feel. Once again I was taken out of my thoughts by a noise.
“Elica!” Came my mother’s voice from an open window inside the house, “Come inside already! It’s almost midnight!” her tone was stern but beneath it was her always motherly voice. My mom was awful at trying to sound commanding. It was like a kitten trying to be as scary as a tiger; just plain funny.
I stopped my tender stroking of Willow and managed to pick up her limp form in my arms, cradling her like a baby. To me, she was my baby. Another snuffle came from her and deep, chocolate brown eyes were revealed under her mass of curly fur, starring into my own forest green ones. A pink tongue came out and licked my cheek lovingly. My return gesture was to nuzzle Willow with my head. She squirmed a bit, and bit my nose gently, but it was obvious she was enjoying the attention.
Carrying my bundle of love, I entered the house, cheeks rosy with the night’s cold. It felt wonderful to feel the warmth of my home after laying in the outside grass for so long. I trudged on through the house, my eyes beginning to close. Being outside filled with thoughts I hadn’t realized how tired I actually was. It was a marathon just to get down the stairs to my room. I dropped onto my bed, releasing Willow from my grasp. She curled up in a small black blob in the middle of my bed and feel asleep. I wished to join her in slumber and tunnelled under the covers, shivering slightly. I’d have to get my mother to put another blanket over the bed soon. That was my last thought before I was off to dream land.
Little did I know, my life would never be the same again.
